YOUNG JANE: It tastes like… Big brekkie set from McDonalds
but with rice and…that black thingy.
YOUNG KATE: It’s called 김
YOUNG JANE: Kate, I could just tell my teacher that our parents are not Korean.
YOUNG KATE:♩♪꽃피는 산골, 복숭아 꽃 살구 꽃 아기 진달래
YOUNG JANE & KATE:♩♪울긋 불긋 꽃 대궐 차린 동네

Brunch in Babel
“ JOAN: For God’s sake, Catherine,
I can’t understand a word you say, your mouth full of food.
I’m tired of looking at your eggs
tumble around your mouth like soggy towels in a dryer. “

“Best Sound Design”
Independent Shorts Awards, Los Angeles, May 2020.

Are we truly an evolved society when much of our relationships and interactions lack genuine communication? Set in a New York City diner, this short drama reveals four distinct relationships, each suffering from the inability to listen, and in turn, to be heard.

Aller Retour
“ She exits the frame
only to come back to take what she’s forgotten —
a half-empty bottle of red and a mug. “

The French title, “Aller Retour,” can be translated in English as “Back and Forth.” This dramatic short film encapsulates emptiness — both spatial and temporal — and its presence in loneliness.

Capitexic
“ Calorie count.
I feel gross.
If I could just trim all this off. “

“Capitexic” is a hybrid between CAPITalism and anorEXIC. This play examines the cyclical parallels between capitalism and eating disorders — how capitalism’s consumerist values can simultaneously promote a culture of restriction (starvation). As the lead role in this coming-of-age play, Hye Bin had the opportunity to delve into the psyche of Elle’s relationship with anorexia.

Good Girl
“ JANE: You’ve always had this way of moving through life,
since we were kids. Seas part for you.
It’s not like that for me.
Jane finishes her cigarette alone, then throws the butt in the fire.
She watches it burn up. “

Hye Bin starred alongside Lucy McMichael in this mother-daughter drama following Jane, a teenage girl arriving home after conversion therapy, and her struggles as well as her will to overcome her sexuality.

Not You But Everyone Else
“ MEL: (Sarcastic) In fact, I got a degree in Viking studies
with a minor in bowling industries management. You?
ANDY: (Equally, if not more, sarcastic)
Well, I decided I wanted the finer things in life
so I got a degree in Canadian Studies.
Naturally, I went to grad school
and now I have masters in Ass-Hattery.
MEL: What was your thesis subject?
ANDY: Twerking. “

When Hye Bin first got the sides in the audition room for this hilarious play and read about feeling like a complete failure writing cover letters, getting rejected from grad school, paying (or being unable to pay) rent — in simple terms, “adulting” — she knew she had to be a part of a story that she knew all too well. In Not You But Everyone Else, Hye Bin played Aria, Mel’s best friend who has her life all together with a great job, a serious relationship — the life-of-the-party in any room she enters.
Nothing like Hye Bin’s real life. Therein lies the beauty of acting.

L Train Vintage: Graham Avenue
“ Kevin: And NOW I’m late to this interview.
I went to school for fucking acting.
I should be asking for change.
Homeless Man: I wouldn’t worry too much about it kid.
I studied law and look at me now. “

What better way to make her stage debut in Manhattan, NYC, than with a piece set entirely in the beloved MTA (NYC’s subway). L-Train Vintage: Graham Avenue brings the audience into the lives of six, seven including the voice of the Train Announcer, New Yorkers. Strangers, friends, and lovers, they journey on the same carriage of the L Train — an underground species we New Yorkers know all too well.

But I Was There
“ All I can remember now is the T.V. in the background,
some late night show host making political jokes
while his hands ran under my sweater. He thought it was funny.
His lips were like callouses. “

Hye Bin starred as Maddie in this deeply raw piece about disconnection and miscommunication. However, the playwright’s fearlessness to address the timely topic of sexual harassment was the reason Hye Bin jumped at the opportunity to tell this story.

Beyond Blue Flowers
” The painting is a self-portrait; her pose is in the midst of movement, like in midst of a dance. However, her reflection in the mirror is of the opposite; bare-faced and wide-eyed with red lipstick, her posture is hunched. “
A fantasy short film that renditions the writer/director’s own journey and discovery towards her femininity and self-worth, amid challenges of societal gender norms and constraints.

A Winter’s Tale
“ Hermione: Tell’s a tale.
Mamillius: Merry or sad shall't be?
Hermione: As merry as you will.
Mamillius: A sad tale's best for winter: I have one
Of sprites and goblins. ”
William Shakespeare

Hye Bin makes her stage debut at Daehak-ro, Seoul’s main theatre district, often referred to as the ‘Broadway’ of Seoul, in this fable-like tale of jealousy, tyranny, repentance, reconciliation — and ultimately, forgiveness.
But with Shakespeare, what else is new?
